“Science” means something quite different depending on the grade. In Grades 1–5, it's one combined subject built around curiosity and observation. By Grades 6–8, it starts splitting into Physics, Chemistry, and Biology strands within a general science syllabus. By Grades 9–10, most boards teach these as distinct subjects with their own exam papers. And from Grade 11, a student isn't studying “Science” anymore at all — they're studying Physics, Chemistry, and/or Biology as separate, specialised subjects, often as part of a defined stream. Treating all of this as one undifferentiated subject is exactly why generic science tutoring falls short as students move up the grades.

CBSE and ICSE/ISC Science

CBSE teaches combined Science through Grade 10 (covering Physics, Chemistry, and Biology within one subject and one exam paper), before it splits into separate Physics, Chemistry, and Biology subjects for Science-stream students in Grades 11–12, following the NCERT syllabus. ICSE similarly teaches Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as distinct examined subjects from an earlier stage than CBSE, continuing into ISC for Grades 11–12 with CISCE's own detailed practical and theory requirements. Both boards place significant weight on numerical problem-solving in Physics and Chemistry, and structured, labelled diagram-based answers in Biology.

IB Sciences

The IB Diploma's Sciences group offers Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Systems and Societies, each available at Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL). All IB science subjects include a significant Internal Assessment (IA) component — an independently designed practical investigation — that carries real weight toward the final subject grade, alongside written exams assessed against IB's specific command-term-based mark schemes. Middle Years Programme (MYP) Sciences for younger IB students builds the investigative and conceptual foundation the DP sciences require.

Cambridge IGCSE and A-Level Sciences

Cambridge IGCSE offers Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as separate subjects (as well as Combined and Co-ordinated Science options), each with a practical component assessed either through coursework or a theory-based alternative-to-practical paper. A-Level Sciences build substantially on IGCSE, with more mathematically demanding Physics and Chemistry, deeper Biology content, and formal practical endorsement requirements that some universities specifically check for.

AP Sciences

AP offers a range of distinct science courses — including AP Physics 1, Physics 2, and Physics C (Mechanics and Electricity & Magnetism), AP Chemistry, and AP Biology — each benchmarked against an introductory college-level course in that subject. These are genuinely different courses in depth and mathematical demand (AP Physics C, for instance, requires calculus), not simply “AP Science” at a single difficulty level, and course selection should match a student's Maths background and intended major.

The Grade 8 to Grade 9 jump feels sudden. Many students find the shift from combined general science to distinct, dedicated Physics/Chemistry/Biology subjects in Grade 9 harder than expected, since the pace and depth increase considerably in a single year.

Numerical problems in Physics and Chemistry cause disproportionate stress. Students who are conceptually strong often still lose marks on numerical questions due to formula application errors or poor working presentation — a technique gap, not a knowledge gap.

Biology gets treated as “just memorisation.” Many students under-prepare for Biology assuming it only requires memorising facts, missing that most boards now test application and data interpretation as heavily as recall.

Choosing the wrong AP Physics course. AP Physics C requires calculus and is significantly more demanding than AP Physics 1; students sometimes enrol without realising the mathematical prerequisite gap, leading to avoidable struggle.
